Silver Proof Piedfort

For the centenary of his birth, Ironside’s Royal Arms adorns this silver Piedfort coin, its magnificent double-thickness struck to Proof quality.

In 2013 we celebrated the centenary of the birth of one of the twentieth century’s most successful numismatic artists, Christopher Ironside. His Royal Arms design, much admired by The Royal Mint Advisory Committee but never struck, adorns this special 50p coin. What greater tribute could there be than a design created by Ironside himself, taken from the vaults straight to the hands of our collectors? With only 1,500 released.

The coin is presented in a sophisticated case, complete with Certificate of Authenticity. Struck to resplendent Proof standard, on a double-thickness blank, accompanied with a booklet that tells the story not only of its designer, but also the fascinating tale behind the coin. Discover Ironside’s rise, explore the challenges of the decimalisation project and the intriguing story of the many designs produced, honed and forgotten, all in absolute secrecy!

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Christopher Ironside, designer of the UK’s first decimal coins, this 50p features his Royal Arms design which was the runner-up to the winning design of Britannia for the first 50p in 1969. The Royal Arms design appeared in public for the first time some 44 years after its creation.

Ironside’s familiar design of Britannia was adopted for the 50p at the time of decimalisation, but among the other designs that he submitted was a version of the Royal Arms. This was liked so much by members of The Royal Mint Advisory Committee that trial pieces of the design were made and the hope was expressed that a use might be found for it. Its appearance in 2013 is therefore a fitting tribute to a great numismatic artist.

The design in its original form used the designation NEW PENCE but this would be inappropriate for 2013 and the value has been amended to FIFTY PENCE.

The Queen’s effigy portrait is the 4th edition by Ian Rank-Broadley.

The designer’s initials CI (for Christopher Ironside) are between the shield and the numerals 50.

Royal Arms Coin Design

Ironside’s Royal Arms, a masterful design…

One of the twentieth century’s leading numismatic artists, Christopher Ironside, spent six years perfecting the reverse designs for Britain’s decimal coins. Those new coins included the familiar Britannia, who adorned the 50p for decades. Numismatists will delight in learning how Ironside’s Britannia was favoured over his striking Royal Arms design. This commemorative Silver Proof 50p brings to life that triumphant design on the 50p, as it was intended.

To celebrate the centenary of Christopher Ironside’s birth the Royal Mint retrieved his Royal Arms design – much admired by The Royal Mint Advisory Committee as it considered designs for decimalisation, but never adopted – from their vaults to grace this 2013 UK 50p Silver Proof Coin. And what an unusual tribute to honour the subject of a commemorative coin with a design produced by the artist himself. This coin marks a momentous time in Britain’s minting history, undoubtedly collectors will be keen to secure one of the 4,500 coins available (apparently only 2,637 were ever sold).

Presented in a sophisticated case complete with Certificate of Authenticity, this silver coin is struck to resplendent Proof standard, and is accompanied by a booklet that tells the story not only of its designer, but also the coin’s fascinating tale. Discover the intriguing story of the how the familiar Britannia design was but one among four entire series of designs produced over six long years by Ironside, in the utmost secrecy.
