Description

Is the Sir Isaac Newton 50p a rare coin?

The 2017 Sir Isaac Newton 50p is the 3rd rarest coin currently in general circulation with a mintage figure of only 1,801,500 coins.

In 2018, the same coin but dated 2018 was in the Strike Your Own option on the Royal Mint Experience tour. These coins are in a Brilliant Uncirculated coin pack and are currently selling for in excess of 50 pounds each.

The Isaac Newton 50p coin is a commemorative coin issued by the Royal Mint in the United Kingdom. It was released in 2017 to celebrate the 375th anniversary of the birth of Sir Isaac Newton, one of the most influential scientists of all time.

Newton is best known for his work on the laws of motion and universal gravitation, as well as for his development of calculus.

The design of the coin features an image inspired by elements of Proposition 11, Problem 19 from Newton’s seminal work, “Principia Mathematica,” which describes the path of a comet. The design was created by Aaron West.

The coin’s edge is plain, and it bears the standard 50p coin specifications: it is a seven-sided, equilateral curve heptagon, made of cupro-nickel, with a weight of 8 grams and a diameter of 27.3mm.

The Isaac Newton 50p coin was initially available exclusively at the Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant, Wales, and at the National Trust’s Woolsthorpe Manor in Lincolnshire, Newton’s birthplace, before being released more widely into circulation.

This coin is highly sought after by collectors, not only because of its historical significance but also due to its limited mintage. The Royal Mint has not disclosed the exact number of these coins minted, but it is known to be one of the rarer coins in circulation, making it particularly valuable to numismatists.

Collectors and those interested in British commemorative coins value the Isaac Newton 50p for its unique design and the significance of the figure it commemorates. Its rarity and connection to one of the most pivotal figures in the history of science add to its appeal.
