RIO 2016
The Rio 2016 Olympic Games was held from August 5th to 21st and was the first Games to be hosted in South America.
Every four years people all over the world are united in friendly rivalry by the Olympic Games, one of the greatest sporting stages. For the London 2012 Olympic Games, the nation got behind Team GB, inspired by that memorable opening ceremony. The Royal Mint was proud to strike the medals awarded to athletes at the ‘Home Games’.
The Royal Mint also issued a series of 50p coins designed by the public to celebrate the event, and they were so popular that many have disappeared from circulation.
