Released in December 2023 with a coin dated 2024.
This coin is part of a series dedicated to featuring various dinosaurs, highlighting the UK’s contribution to paleontology and the discovery of these prehistoric creatures.
The T. rex, often referred to as the “king of the tyrant lizards,” is renowned for its massive size, powerful bite, and role as a top predator in its ecosystem during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 68 to 66 million years ago.
The Tyrannosaurus rex itself was a bipedal carnivore with a massive skull balanced by a long, heavy tail. Relative to its large and powerful hind limbs, its forelimbs were short but strong, equipped with two clawed digits.
It is among the largest known land predators, with estimates of its size reaching up to 40 feet in length and 12 feet in height at the hips, weighing around 9 tons. The T. rex’s fossils are found in a variety of rock formations across what is now western North America, which was then an island continent known as Laramidia.
The issuance of the Tyrannosaurus Rex 50p coin serves not only as a tribute to this magnificent creature but also as an educational tool, sparking interest in paleontology among collectors and the general public alike. It celebrates the fascination with dinosaurs that has persisted since their fossils were first discovered, leading to significant scientific research that has expanded our understanding of prehistoric life.

What people had to say about this coin
The Royal Mint, in partnership with the Natural History Museum, has unveiled a new series of collectible 50p coins, each featuring a renowned dinosaur specimen. This series marks the debut of the Tyrannosaurus on a UK fifty pence piece.
This collection comprises three coins, each dedicated to a celebrated dinosaur: Tyrannosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Diplodocus. These coins have been meticulously crafted by the esteemed British paleo-artist Robert Nicholls, under the expert guidance of Professor Paul Barrett from the Natural History Museum.
Reflecting the latest scientific insights and the expertise of leading paleontologists from the Natural History Museum, the designs on each coin offer a scientifically accurate portrayal of these dinosaurs and their natural habitats.
A select number of these coins will be enhanced with color, vividly bringing to life the appearance of these dinosaurs and their environments as they would have existed.
Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint, expressed her enthusiasm: “We are thrilled to introduce these magnificent new collectible 50p coins from The Royal Mint, celebrating some of the most iconic and formidable dinosaurs to have ever roamed the Earth, including the Tyrannosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Diplodocus.
Dinosaurs dominated the Earth for nearly 200 million years, making it entirely appropriate for them to be immortalized on an official UK coin. We hope that these coins will captivate and inspire both avid and aspiring paleontologists for many years to come.
“Our skilled artisans have meticulously translated Robert Nicholls’ detailed illustrations into the fine details on each coin. Capturing the formidable presence of the Tyrannosaurus on the small surface of a fifty pence piece requires immense skill, and we are extremely proud of the outcome.”
Robert Nicholls, the artist behind The Royal Mint’s Dinosaur 50p coin collection, shared his passion for his work: “My entire life has been devoted to resurrecting extinct creatures through my art. From the moment I could grasp a pencil, I have been drawing dinosaurs – they are my passion. Any project that allows me to work with these ancient animals is a joy, but the chance to design collectible coins for The Royal Mint, with royal endorsement, is particularly special.”
Maxine Lister, Head of Licensing at the Natural History Museum, commented, “We are delighted to extend our collaboration with The Royal Mint on the Tales of the Earth series. Dinosaurs have always evoked feelings of wonder and fascination, and it’s fantastic to see three of the most iconic specimens, including a tribute to the nation’s beloved Dippy, eternalized on a 50p coin. We hope this collection will enable people of all ages to share in the marvels of our natural world.”
This series represents the third installment in The Royal Mint’s ‘Tales of the Earth’ series, which celebrates the remarkable ancient creatures and dinosaurs that once inhabited our planet.
