Modern Pentathlon is one of the more unusual events in the Royal Mint's London 2012 sports series, combining fencing, freestyle swimming, show jumping and a combined running-and-shooting discipline in a single competition - a format originally devised to test the all-round skills of a 19th-century cavalry officer.
