2019 · The Gruffalo · Circulating
Price Guide: £4.00
Marking 20 years since Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler's "The Gruffalo" was first published, this 50p brings the terrifying-but-lovable monster to a UK coin for the first time, adapted from Scheffler's original book artwork. A second design, "The Gruffalo and Mouse", followed the same year, and "The Gruffalo's Child" was added to the family in 2024.
The standard circulating Gruffalo 50p was struck in significant numbers and is a common, affordable find, while Royal Mint Brilliant Uncirculated, Silver Proof and Gold Proof editions - see the Variants & Values table - are aimed at collectors and carry a premium reflecting their lower mintage.
Every finish The Royal Mint issued for this design, with issue price, mintage and value where known.
The reverse depicts the Gruffalo, adapted from Axel Scheffler's original book illustrations.
Current collector guide value is around £4.00, though this varies with condition and demand. See the full variants table on this page for issue prices and mintage by finish.
Mintage figures vary by finish - see the variants table above for the limited-edition cap and current mintage of each version.
It was first issued in 2019.
