The Mighty Megalosaurus: A Prehistoric Predator

While early depictions portrayed it as a lumbering quadruped resembling a hippo, today we understand the Megalosaurus was a fearsome theropod. This large, bipedal predator stalked Britain during the Middle Jurassic period, roughly 170 to 155 million years ago.

But the Megalosaurus’ significance extends beyond its impressive size and predatory prowess. Alongside fossils of the Iguanodon and Hylaeosaurus, its remains played a crucial role in shaping our understanding of dinosaurs. These discoveries prompted anatomist Richard Owen to coin the term “Dinosauria” in 1842.

Now, the Megalosaurus is immortalized on a special 50p coin, a fitting tribute to this landmark British discovery.

Designed by paleo-artist Robert Nicholls, renowned for his anatomically accurate reconstructions, the coin depicts the Megalosaurus in all its glory.

The Royal Mint collaborated with the Natural History Museum’s Earth Sciences Department to ensure scientific accuracy.

This collectible coin comes in various editions, each offering a unique way to own a piece of prehistoric history:

  • Gold and Silver Proof: Limited quantities for the discerning collector.
  • Color-printed Silver Proof: Vibrant colors bring the Megalosaurus to life.
  • Color-printed Brilliant Uncirculated: Exclusive to The Royal Mint, with stunning color detailing.
  • Standard Brilliant Uncirculated: A classic option for everyday carrying or coin collections.

Whether you’re a dinosaur enthusiast, a history buff, or simply appreciate beautifully crafted coins, the Megalosaurus 50p offers a captivating glimpse into our prehistoric past.

Megalosaurus Information

In 1824 William Buckland, an eccentric clergyman and palaeontologist, produced the first scientific description of what became known as a dinosaur based on fragments of jaw and bone found in Oxfordshire. Buckland named the creature Megalosaurus, which means ‘great lizard’.

  • Diet: carnivorous
  • When it lived: Mid-Jurassic Period, 170-155 million years ago!
  • Found in: England, United Kingdom
  • Size: a quarter of the size of a T-Rex (9m)
  • Megalosaurus was one of the first dinosaurs discovered.
