Description
The Mr. Jeremy Fisher 50p coin, released in 2017, forms part of a series celebrating Beatrix Potter and her much-loved literary characters.
This coin is notable for bringing Mr. Jeremy Fisher, the character from Potter’s 1906 story, to life on a UK coin for the first time, following the success of the initial series released the previous year to mark 150 years since the author’s birth.
Designed by Emma Noble, the coin depicts Mr. Jeremy Fisher in his iconic waterproof mackintosh, a reflection of the character’s adventure as a frog who lives by a pond and faces challenges while trying to catch minnows for tea.
The obverse features the 5th portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, consistent with UK coinage of the period.
The coin’s specifications include a cupronickel alloy, a weight of 8g (though some sources mention 10g), and a diameter of 27.3mm (some sources state 27.5mm), standard for 50p coins.
Is this a rare 50p coin?
The circulation mintage of the Mr. Jeremy Fisher 50p was 9,900,000 coins, making it a common find rather than a rarity. Despite its widespread availability, the coin has garnered interest among collectors, especially those keen on Beatrix Potter’s work or British cultural memorabilia. The 2009 Kew Gardens 50p is the rarest fifty pence in the UK.
For coins in circulated condition, the value is typically around the face value, but well-preserved examples can fetch slightly higher prices.
Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) versions and special editions, such as the Silver Proof coins, are available for collectors seeking items in pristine condition, with BU coins fetching around £4.
