What is the history of the 50p coin in the United Kingdom?

The history of the 50p coin in the United Kingdom dates back to October 1969 when it was first introduced into circulation. This coin was revolutionary due to its unique shape, an equilateral curve heptagon, which made it easily distinguishable both by touch and by sight from the traditional round coins.

In later years, the United Kingdom decided to introduce smaller denomination coins, such as the 5p and 10p, in 1990 and 1992 respectively. As a result, a smaller version of the 50p coin was introduced on September 1st, 1997. From 1997 to 2020, the United Kingdom saw the release of numerous designs for the 50p coin, some of which are still in circulation today. You can read more at the Royal Mint Museum website.

It’s worth noting that while many of these 50p coin designs can be found in everyday circulation and obtained as part of your change, there is also a small number of commemorative coins that were not intended for general circulation.

These unique coins are not typically found in everyday transactions as they are specifically issued as specially-packaged Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) coins and are often purchased by collectors rather than being used as regular currency.
