2020 Rosalind Franklin 50p coin
The Rosalind Franklin 50p was released in 2020 and inspired by the failure to credit Rosalind Franklin for the part she played in determining the structure of DNA,
Rosalind Franklin made a crucial contribution to the discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA, but some would say she got a raw deal. Biographer Brenda Maddox called her the “Dark Lady of DNA,” based on a once disparaging reference to Franklin by one of her coworkers.
Rosalind becomes the second scientist to be celebrated in The Royal Mint’s Innovation in Science coin series, following the 2019 Stephen Hawking 50p.
The Rosalind Franklin commemorative 50p was designed by a member of the Royal Mint internal Creative Team, David Knapton snd features a depiction of her famous Photograph 51, which enabled her to discover the structure of DNA. The obverse features the 5th portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark.
