Note it is dated 2009 and not 2011 like the much more common Athletics 50p circulated coin of the same design.

What is the Blue Peter 50p?

Blue Peter 50p coin was issued in 2009 ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The design is by a competition winner on the Blue Peter TV show, chosen from 17,000 competition entries.

Nine-year-old Florence Jackson, from Bristol, is the first child ever to work with the Royal Mint to design a UK coin.

Florence won the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to design a coin celebrating London 2012 by taking part in a Blue Peter competition.

Florence Jackson said:

I am so excited. It was a real surprise to win. I’d never entered a Blue Peter competition before but really wanted to take part because I love drawing. I chose high-jump because I’d watched it on TV before and thought it looked fun. It was amazing to visit the Royal Mint and see my picture turned into a coin. I can’t wait to see it in my pocket money!

Florence’s design for the Blue Peter 50p Winner’s Edition coin is only the 17th design to appear on the UK’s 50p.

As an official Licensed Product of London 2012, the Blue Peter 50p Winner’s Edition coin features the London 2012 logo.

The Blue Peter 50p coin holds a unique place in British numismatic history, not only for its design and the story behind its creation but also for its appeal among collectors. Issued in 2009 by the Royal Mint, this coin was designed to commemorate the London 2012 Olympic Games, specifically the athletic event of the high jump.

What sets this coin apart is its origin: the design was the result of a competition run by the iconic British children’s television program, “Blue Peter.”

Design and Features

The winning design was created by Florence Jackson, a nine-year-old viewer of “Blue Peter,” making it particularly special as it was the first UK coin designed by a child. The design features an athlete performing a high jump over a bar, with the London 2012 Olympic logo above and the denomination “50 PENCE” below.

This coin captures the spirit of the Olympics and the involvement of younger generations in such a global event.

Mintage Figures and Collectibility

The Blue Peter 50p coin is notable for its relatively low mintage figure. Approximately 19,751 coins were issued in Brilliant Uncirculated condition as part of a special Blue Peter presentation pack, which included a badge and was available for purchase from the Royal Mint. This low mintage figure contributes to the coin’s desirability among collectors.

Worth

The value of the Blue Peter 50p coin can vary significantly depending on its condition and whether it is part of the original presentation pack. As of my last update, prices for the coin in its original packaging could fetch significantly more than its face value, with figures varying based on the current market and collector demand.

It’s important for collectors to research recent sales and consult reputable coin dealers for the most current valuations.
